Empowering Parents: Families as the foundation of a learning society
Written by Titus Alexander (27 pages A4). 1996

The report presents a detailed summary of the views and recommendations of over 1,000 parents and people who work with families across Britain. It contains a wealth of ideas about how to support parents and children and gives a flavour of the discussion taking place about parenting education and support in many different settings. A Job for Life
Written by Hetty Einzig (12 pages A4). 2004
A research briefing that looks at a key historical moment in the establishment of parenting education and support in Britain: the point in the early 1980s when the needs of parents were officially recognised for the first time. The briefing looks at three documents produced at this time (A job for life: Education and support for parents; Parenting as a job for life; and The needs of parents) and examines how the principles laid down in response to these documents helped shape parenting education and support as we know them.

Qualities of Helpful Parenting: A discussion document
Parenting Education & Support Forum (now Parenting UK) (4 pages A4). 2005
An invited group of experts bringing a variety of perspectives, produced a number of ideas which they agreed could constitute the underlying qualities of good parenting. We asked a further group with different perspectives to comment, and finally summarized their conclusions in this short discussion document. It is not a list of effective parenting skills or strategies, which vary widely between cultures, beliefs and circumstances, but a description of the general approach and underlying qualities which we believe characterise helpful parenting. It forms an evidence led treatise to support policy development.
