Training

Children's Workforce Development Council

The Children’s Workforce and Development Council (CWDC) has now taken over responsibility for support to those who work with parents under a new programme within the organisation – Support to Work with Parents and Families – which has three areas:

  1. Qualifications and training development and delivery
  2. Communication and strategic change
  3. Promotion of evidence-based practice throughout the workforce

The aim of the 'Support to Work with Parents and Families' programme will be to provide support for updating the work with parents (WWP) national occupational standards (NOS) and qualifications and link it to the agreed strategy of the children and young people's workforce.

Qualifications and training development and delivery

CWDC will work with partners to develop a comprehensive qualification and career framework for all those who work with parents by:

  • Continuing to work with other organisations to develop training and qualifications linked to the agreed strategy of the children and young people's workforce and continue to support Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) in updating the Work with Parents National Occupational Standards.
  • Making 600 places available for the Level 3 WWP qualification.
  • Making 5000 places available for workers engaged in outreach work from children's centres (linked to a unit of the WWP qualification).
  • Taking forward work to assess best practice in parental involvement in training.
  • Ensure materials about the common core are addressed to those who work with parents and families.

Promotion of evidence-based practice throughout the workforce

In 2010-11 CWDC will be offering 2000 free places on training courses to deliver evidence based parenting programmes, including a project to provide more access to training for the third sector.  These places will be allocated to the following specific priority groups:

  • Family Intervention Programmes (FIP).
  • Parenting Early Intervention Programme (PEIP).
  • Youth Offending Team (YOT).
  • Children's centres and extended services in schools.

Only applications from practitioners working in these services will be considered. Find out more about evidence-based training programmes.

Search the Commissioning Toolkit

The Commissioning Toolkit is a searchable online database of parenting programmes and approaches available in England. It is aimed at commissioners and provides detailed information about each programme's aims, content, target groups and training requirements. Most importantly, it also provides information about their quality and effectiveness, enabling commissioners to make informed choices about how suitable a programme is for meeting the needs of specific groups of parents.

Please see the Practitioner Courses page of this website for listings of other training courses run for people who work with parents.
